ST PETER UPON CORNHILL

This church was founded on the site of a very early site of worship—a Roman basilica raised in A.D. 179. By the Middle Ages, now set in a busy network of medieval alleys and courtyards, the church had a large library and a grammar school attached to it. Its post-Fire stuccoed exterior has a simple brick tower capped by a dome and obelisk. The façade is Palladian, with arched windows separated by pilasters, and two circular windows. Mendelssohn played the Father Smith organ here in 1840 and 1842. To the south is a raised graveyard described by Dickens in Our Mutual Friend. The adjacent terracotta building reveals a piece of architectural revenge. Because a Victorian rector at St Peter’s had complained about a new office site encroaching onto church land by a few inches, the architects had to redesign the entire building. They added three angry devils—one spitting, one sticking up its fingers rudely, and one that resembles the protesting rector.
